Amazon.com

With a geometry designed to take big hits but with features conducive to a beginner, the Tess 20 Jr. Mountain Bike is Diamondback's introductory mountain bike for girls. Tess features a front suspension fork, an integrated chainguard, and durable Shimano twist shifters and derailleurs for trouble-free, single-handed gear changes that familiarize the beginning rider with the process of shifting. The six-speed twist shifter introduces the young rider to shifting without causing too much confusion, while the linear pull brakes help her get used to braking with her hands instead of her feet. The steel frame is built for both speed and riding the trails, with wide, knobby tires for traction on rocks, dirt, and scree.

  • Front suspension fork features 40mm of shockproof travel to ensure a smooth ride
  • Drivetrain provides 6 speeds; integrated chainguard

1.0 out of 5 stars Junk!, May 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Diamondback Girls' Tess 20 Jr Mountain Bike (2011 Model, 20-Inch Wheels) (Sports)
I bought this bike for my daughters 8th birthday. I have aways liked and respected the Diamondback name and thought this bike would be another quality product. I was very disapointed. The bike is very heavy. The front shock is a joke, it does not compress at all. The shifter and rear deraileur broke after only 6 weeks of very light use. I am very disapointed. I also contacted Diamondback about returning this bike and they sent me a few nice e-mails and promised to contact Amazon but were no help at all. I still have this bike, I would LOVE to ship it back for a refund. Very disapointed and let down. I have 3 children and I will never purchace a Diamondback product again and I will never buy another expensive item from Amazon again. If I had bought this from a local store Im sure I could have returned it, but now I'm stuck with a junk bike.

2.0 out of 5 stars Gears are impossible to shift, shock is sized for a 200lb adult, May 8, 2011
This review is from: Diamondback Girls' Tess 20 Jr Mountain Bike (2011 Model, 20-Inch Wheels) (Sports)
I just purchased this bike for my 8 year old daughter. She is a tough little girl, with strong grip. However, she can only downshift (like going from 1st to 2nd, or 2nd to 3rd), but not up shift (like going 3rd to 2nd, or 2nd to 1st). I think the shifting could be easily fixed by using a different style shifter instead of the twist-grip.

Also - the front shock will only compress when I put all of my 180 lbs over the handle bars. What a JOKE!

Like the other review, it is heavy, but that doesn't bother me much. It is bullet-proof.

I'm attempting to return it - we'll see how far I get.

The bike is good but one needs to adjust everything before it is ready to use. My 8y old loves it. It seems like a very durable bike, it already took quite an abuse. Make sure to get a kick-stand (should have been included).
Regarding the front shocks. They are not designed to swing up and down when a kid leans on the handles. They work perfectly on the road for absorbing bumps. So no complains there.
The shifter was a little stiff in the beginning but it got better.
I'm glad I got this bike. It is much better quality than the $120 junk at toy stores.

Unique Design Encourages Balance

Learning how to ride a traditional two-wheel bicycle can be difficult for young children. This self-balancing bike provides a fun and progressive start to a lifetime of bicycle riding. First-time riders can build their confidence while developing critical coordination and motor skills. Since there are no petals on the bike, kids can stop or start riding without the fear of having to hold their balance for too long.

No Pedals or Gears for Simple Operation

The bike sports a sleek and distinctive appearance. Its extra-wide wheels create a self-balancing design that helps children transition easily from a three-wheeler to a conventional two-wheel bike. Kids simply use their feet to push themselves along without the fuss of pedals, training wheels, or gears.

A wide curved seat and steering handles with comfortable grips aid in maintaining balance. The steering range is limited so kids can't make sharp, dangerous turns. For added fun, the bike includes a horn that squeaks to let everyone know when your child's coming through.

Lightweight for Easy Transport

Transporting the bike is easy thanks to its lightweight design and integrated handle. Weighing less than 8 pounds, the small bike is practical for carrying to playdates and transporting in a vehicle. This bike can support a maximum weight of 55 pounds.

Adult supervision is recommended when using the PlasmaBike, and children are encouraged to wear a helmet and shoes when riding. The bike is not for use on wooden floors as the wheels may damage surfaces.

What's in the Box

Fully assembled PlasmaBike.

  • Introducing PlasmaBike - a balance bike like no other
  • No batteries, gears or pedals - just a fun, encouraging and progressive start to bicycle riding
  • Weighing less than 6 lbs, it is lightweight and transports easily

5.0 out of 5 stars Good way to start, November 26, 2011

I got this for my soon to be 2 year old son. He likes watching his big brother ride his bike, but hasn't been able to join in. The packaging was confusing. It came in a humongous box with another box inside with which held the bike. Seemed like a big waste to me.

As for the bike itself, my 2 year old really likes it. He kinda scoots around on it as best he can. We're only using it indoors right now since we don't have a helmet and I just don't trust the balance of this outside on concrete. He has fallen over a few times, but I'm not sure if that has been him or the bike. Most likely him. The wheels are pretty wide and seem stable.

I do appreciate that I didn't have to try to put this together. It came assembled. The little horn on it is kinda ridiculous. It just kinda squeaks at you. It's lightweight enough that my 2 year old can carry it around, but sturdy enough that the 5 year old can push him from behind and it stays (mostly) upright.

After almost... Read more

I just gave the bike to my son and he is just going nuts about it. The bike is stable, easy to scoot, and overall, fun. This is definitely a homerun once again for PlaSmart. It has an attractive design and I love the inherent safety.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program ( What's this?)
This bike is incredibly sturdy, and to give you an example I will tell you about how it arrived. I don't know if there was a problem with the shipper, but the bike came in a very large box that was falling apart. It was obvious the side had been retaped, and and there was absolutely no packing material in the box - the bike was just placed in there and had been rolling around as it was transported. Nonetheless, when we took it out of the box it was just fine - not a scratch or dent and it's obvious that this is one resilient toy.

Another big plus for me was that there is nothing to put together - literally just lift it out of the box and it's ready to go.

It's really an attractive toy and the colors and style are just fantastic.

So what did a 21 month old rough and tumble little boy think about it? He loved it. My nephew ran right over to it and got right on top. It is so stable and solidly built that he was able to stay on top of it and race around... Read more
