About Mongoose
In 1974, BMX Products, Inc., later to be known as Mongoose Bicycles, launched from a humble garage. The first of its kind, the BMX bicycle was named after bicycle motocross and was designed to fit the needs of the rough-and-tumble dirt-racing pastime that took its toll on wheels and bicycles. The heavy-duty, one-piece cast-aluminum Mongoose Motomag wheel was soon born, and it was the first competition-ready BMX bicycle available. Skip Hess, while in Australia pursuing his motor sports passion, came into contact with a strange and unusual cat-size animal--the mongoose. Known for its passive nature while unprovoked, yet vicious and aggressive enough to kill a threatening Cobra twice its size, the Mongoose impressed Hess, who quickly registered the Mongoose trademark for his new bicycle racing frame.

The Expert BMX bicycle model, which is still a cornerstone of the Mongoose BMX line today, was introduced in 1980. Shortly after, Mongoose captured the first ever ABA National #1 Cruiser Title. Previously known for the 20-inch bicycle, this title signaled the re-direction of Mongoose bicycles to larger-wheeled, adult-sized models. Several years later, Mongoose continues to dominate the cruiser racing circuit with six National No. 1 Cruiser titles, leading to the introduction of adult-sized Mongoose all-terrain bicycles (ATBs).

In 1992, Mongoose pioneered the full-suspension market with the introduction of the Amplifier. This design is still the most-copied suspension design in the market. Several year later, Mongoose launched the Newman adult bicycle frame, which is proven to be 15% stronger than any other bike frame in the market. The design, while functionally sound, also raised eyebrows because of its distinctive look.

In the next few years, Mongoose increased its marketing focus to dominate the bicycle industry, and more important, extend beyond it. The Mongoose brand marketing initiative makes more than 100 million impressions. Mongoose’s brand awareness increased by over 130% in 1999 and solidifies the No. 2 market share position in units and dollars. Mongoose was acquired by Pacific Cycle, LLC, and continues to grow and prosper with more than 40 models of BMX, mountain, trail, freestyle, jumping, comfort, road, and cyclocross bikes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reviewing the Bike, not the shipping- Excellent First Bike, December 20, 2009

First, I'd like to urge fellow reviewers to rate products based on the product, not on the seller, price, or shipping. Each of those problems can be addressed within the review or to the specific party involved, but it tells nothing about the product and giving a rating considering these factors doesn't give an accurate account of the ITEM, which is what the rating is supposed to address. That being said, i bought this bike for my 4 year old. It doesn't come with a kickstand, which isn't a big deal at the present because she needs the training wheels. Kickstands are easy to find, but I would prefer having one in the box. The bike is beautiful and durable. It was fairly easy to assemble and like all children's bikes, it is a bit hefty with a shipping weight of 30 pounds. A bike for a 3-6 year favors sturdiness over speed. My daughter loves it. I will agree with other reviewers about the hand brake (caliper) being stiff and difficult for a child to operate. Overall, I would recommend... Read more

The bike is very durable, easy to maneuver, and to assemble. The only flaws I find is that the hand brake is extremely hard to squeeze (I'm her dad and it takes a lot of effort for me!). The default pedal brakes are sufficient and my 5 year old quickly figured out how to brake by reversing the direction of her peddling. The other downside is its weight. I'd say easily 50 pounds of solid metal which is about the same weight of my adult graphite bike. But again, you are getting something very durable.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mongoose Pizazz 16" of poor quality, December 27, 2010

I had ordered this bike for X-mas and it was delivered very fast. Box was not sealed anymore and when I pulled it all out it had minor scratched plus I found no instructions. Instructions or lack thereof were not a problem for me as I assembled it in about 20 minutes. The problem is the materials used in the bike itself.

Warning: NEVER purchase a bike with plastic rims. I had not caught that when I ordered it. The plastic rims were warped making the back wheel stick to the handbrake pad and lock up. Now if it was hard for me to get the wheel rotating, how would a 4 year old be able to do it. The back wheel was already affixed right out of the box (crooked I might add). No adjusting would be able to make it work due to the warping of the plastic.

Back it goes. A real shame as it's very cute but a company shouldn't cheap out on one of the most important parts. Please make sure you get alloy rims.
